Incendie à Télé École : Le ministre Moustapha Guirassy annonce un plan de soutien financier et matériel
Following the devastating fire that ravaged the Télé École facilities on Tuesday, June 9, the Minister of National Education, Moustapha Mamba Guirassy, visited the damaged premises on Monday, June 15, to assess the damage and express the government's solidarity with Professor Assane Mboup, founder of Africa's first educational television station. Accompanied by a large delegation, the Minister was able to witness firsthand the extent of the losses suffered by this leading educational institution, built over more than twelve years of investment and dedication to education.
In front of the managers and staff of Télé École, Mr. Guirassy praised the exceptional career of Professor Assane Mboup, whom he described as a "builder" and "entrepreneur of his time." He noted that the channel developed "without external funding or initial institutional support." "When an entire investment accumulated over years disappears in a few minutes, we can imagine the immense pain it represents. But what impressed us most was your courage, your spirituality, and your immediate determination to rebuild," the minister told Professor Mboup.
He also highlighted the attitude of the founder of Télé École in the aftermath of the disaster. According to the minister, despite the ordeal, Professor Mboup demonstrated composure and determination by quickly assembling his teams to begin planning for reconstruction. Moustapha Guirassy also emphasized the educational value of this resilient stance: “You are an educator in the truest sense of the word. The example you set today inspires young people, families, and all those going through difficult times.”
The Minister of National Education assured the Télé École channel of the government's support in its relaunch process. "You will have the Ministry of National Education by your side."
“We will be there financially, materially, and in the development of your projects. This partnership must go beyond mere assistance and become integral to the very core of your activities,” he stated. The minister reiterated that the private sector, when engaged in a mission of public interest, is an extension of public service and deserves special support when such challenges arise.
Speaking at the event, Professor Assane Mboup first gave thanks to God for the absence of human lives despite the intensity of the fire. “We lost a lot of material possessions, but we had no injuries. That in itself is reason enough to thank Allah,” he declared. The founder of Télé École emphasized the need to remain positive in the face of adversity and reaffirmed his determination to rebuild the institution. “We are entering a phase of recovery and complete reconstruction. Télé École has inspired several African countries, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. We have a duty to remain strong and continue our educational mission,” he asserted.
Professor Mboup also highlighted the channel's technological resilience. According to him, despite the destruction of physical infrastructure, Télé École's signal remained operational thanks to anticipating digital developments and the early adoption of IP broadcasting systems. "We lost no data. Viewers barely felt the impact of the fire on our programming. This demonstrates the relevance of the technological choices we have made over the years," he explained.
Assane Mboup also pointed out that Télé École goes far beyond a personal project. "Télé École doesn't belong to me. It's a collective endeavor undertaken by teachers, collaborators, and partners committed to education. Our mission is national," he stated.
He finally expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of National Education for its constant support since the creation of the channel, stressing that this institutional support has largely contributed to the credibility and recognition of Télé École within the Senegalese audiovisual landscape.
