[Lumière de la foi] Ahmadou Sakhir Ndiéguène, l'humilité d'un guide qui avait prédit son dépar

In this tenth installment of "Lights of Faith," Seneweb takes you to the Keur Mame Elhadji neighborhood in Thiès. There, we honor the memory of El Hadji Ahmadou Sakhir Ndiéguène, a spiritual leader whose exceptional longevity—107 years—was matched only by his piety. A man of consensus, a social mediator, and a lover of the Holy Book, he left an indelible mark. Discover the portrait of a builder who, at the hour of his last breath, possessed no other wealth than the light of the Quran.

In the Keur Mame Elhadji neighborhood of Thiès, the memory of El Hadji Ahmadou Sakhir Ndiéguène remains deeply rooted in the collective memory. A respected religious leader, a man of peace and a builder, he left his mark on the spiritual and social history of this city.

In the mosque he himself had built, recitations of the Holy Quran resonate particularly strongly during this blessed month of Ramadan. It is in this spiritually charged setting that his grandson, Sheikh Ahmed Sall Ndiéguène, the family's communications officer, reflected on the life and work of this man considered a great servant of Islam.

A century of spiritual sedentarism

Born in 1890 in Thiès, El Hadji Ahmadou Sakhir Ndiéguène was the son of El Hadji Ahmadou Barro Ndiéguène, founder of the Keur Mame Elhadji neighborhood, and Sokhna Aminata Faye. He spent virtually his entire life in this religious community. The only time he spent a night away from Keur Mame Elhadji was during a trip to Gorée Island to visit one of his father's disciples. Apart from this journey, he lived all 107 years of his life in this spiritual home.

From a very young age, his father instilled in him the study of the Holy Quran before sending him to Thiakh Niang, in the Diourbel region, to study with El Hadji Birane Niang and further his religious education. There, he deepened his mastery of the Quran and enriched his Islamic knowledge before returning to Keur Mame Elhadji. As the eldest son in the family, he quickly became his father's right-hand man, entrusted with numerous responsibilities and gradually preparing him to succeed him. Upon his father's death in 1936, El Hadji Ahmadou Sakhir Ndiéguène became the caliph.

The mediator and the builder

During his spiritual leadership, he continued and expanded upon his father's work. He developed the city of Keur Mame Elhadji, built a mosque there, and contributed to the modernization of the neighborhood. A visionary, he also harbored a deep concern for the country's development and the well-being of its people. A man of great openness, he made no distinction between ethnicities, races, or religions. For him, the community should live in peace and social cohesion.

Known for his mediation skills, he even played an important role with President Léopold Sédar Senghor in order to obtain the reinstatement of railway workers dismissed following a strike.

Alongside his social work, he devoted a large part of his time to learning and teaching the Quran. A skilled farmer, he also shared the fruits of his harvests with the local population.

A holy end of life

The month of Ramadan held a special place in his life. During this period, he increased his acts of devotion, recited the Quran, and performed acts of solidarity. In particular, he organized Latif Al-Kurane sessions and distributed prayer beads to his followers.

According to witnesses, El Hadji Ahmadou Sakhir Ndiéguène had even predicted his death. Shortly before his passing, he visited his father's grave and then told the villagers that he only had a few days left to live. He finally died on August 14, 1997, at the age of 107. True to his humble lifestyle, he left no fortune behind.

His relatives found only 70 CFA francs in his pockets. His true wealth was Islam, spirituality, and the Holy Quran.

Today, his legacy lives on: the regional hospital in Thiès bears his name. Currently, his son, Serigne Mounirou Ndiéguène, is in charge of its spiritual direction.
