Maison des Nations-Unies à Diamniadio : Un protocole d’accord signé pour sa mise à disposition
It's official! The United Nations House in Diamniadio is now available to UN authorities. The Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs, and Senegalese Abroad, His Excellency Cheikh Niang, and the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, signed the memorandum of understanding. The official ceremony took place this Friday, June 12, 2026, at the Ministry's headquarters in Dakar.
"A mutually beneficial and balanced legal instrument"
This agreement, initialed by the State of Senegal and the United Nations, is the result of the personal commitment of the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who, following in the footsteps of his predecessors, instructed Minister Cheikh Niang to continue the efforts undertaken with all stakeholders to ensure the effective relocation of UN structures to Diamniadio. This will bring together all UN agencies present in Senegal under one roof. The United Nations House in Diamniadio thus confirms Dakar's role as a regional hub for multilateralism in Africa.
According to the Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, this agreement reconciles the common ambition of Senegal and the United Nations with the demands of the current situation which, for him, spare neither States nor international organizations.
“This memorandum of understanding is, in our view, a mutually beneficial and balanced legal instrument. The objective, as you know, is to continue the fruitful partnership with all UN entities present in Senegal, and to contribute to strengthening their operational effectiveness. In this regard, our next task will be to resolutely commit to consolidating the multiple headquarters agreements into a comprehensive agreement with UN structures in the spirit of a single UN,” stressed H.E. Cheikh Niang.
He adds: "By constructing this building on 13 hectares following an ecological approach that meets the most demanding international standards, particularly in terms of safety, functionality and environment, Senegal wanted to put all the UN structures present in Senegal in better working conditions, in the legendary spirit of Teranga."
"You have a new house, come and live in it."
In this regard, the minister believes that their real work begins now. "It is the optimal and effective deployment of United Nations agencies in their new home. You have a new home, come and occupy it," the Senegalese diplomat stated.
To this end, Cheikh Niang reassured the UN Deputy Secretary-General and her team that they can count on his ministry to support the relocations on site, by mobilizing all state-run structures.
The minister also expressed "his full gratitude" for the personal commitment and faith that Ms. Amina J. Mouhammed has always had in this project and for all the support she has provided to ensure the project's success.
A modern building with a capacity to accommodate over 3,000 staff
It is worth recalling that the United Nations House, a large-scale public-private partnership (PPP) project, was inaugurated on November 23, 2023, by former President Macky Sall. It has a capacity to accommodate over 3,000 staff and 2,000 officials and visitors. Its objective was to provide the 34 UN agencies present in Senegal with "an ideal and suitable working environment to facilitate complementary interactions."
