"Nos officiers refusent de prendre une 2ème femme !" : la folle colère des célibataires gabonaises
Adopted in 2024 during the Transition period, the law authorizing polygamy for senior army officers had sparked immense hope. Thousands of Gabonese women had welcomed it with open arms and feet, seeing it as a concrete opportunity for marriage and social stability, recalled the representative of the Association of Single Women, addressing President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. But two years later, enthusiasm has given way to bitterness: on the ground, "these senior officers are still married to only one woman."
Denouncing the inconsistent application of the law, the association insists that "no one is above the law." It does, however, commend the President's commitment and the example he sets by having married two women, as well as the attention paid to "children who are crying about getting married." Going further, single people are now calling for strict enforcement of the law and clear incentives for military officers to assume their responsibilities.
