Strategy for eliminating cervical and breast cancer: The "Badianou Gokh" of Thiès are hard at work

Stratégie d'élimination des cancers du col de l'utérus et du sein : Les "Badianou Gokh" de Thiès à pied d'œuvre

In Thiès, breast and cervical cancers are among the most common diseases and have a high mortality rate among women. This explains the growing concern of the authorities, who have highlighted the central role played by the "Badianou Gokh" (neighborhood godmothers) during this Pink October campaign, through community-based initiatives for awareness, prevention, and screening.

These courageous women, through grassroots awareness campaigns, are actively engaging with women in neighborhoods, markets, and homes to explain the risks of women's cancers. They promote early detection, encouraging women to visit health facilities (health posts and districts) for life-saving screenings.

"Badianou Gokh" who, through guidance and support pedagogy, facilitate the link between the population and medical personnel (midwives, doctors) during the free or mobile consultation days organized during this month of October.

These are regular campaigns that allow hundreds of screening tests to be carried out and offer vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) to young girls to prevent cervical cancer.

The mayor of Thiès, Dr Babacar Diop, sponsor of the Pink October day, celebrated this Thursday, October 1st at the 10th RIAOM health district, reaffirmed his commitment alongside women and his support for the "Badianou Gokh" in the fight against breast and cervical cancers.
