Tivaouane : L’attente prolongée autour de la grande mosquée alimente l’impatience des fidèles
In the religious city of El Seydi El Hadji Malick Sy, the imposing silhouette of the brand-new grand mosque dominates the landscape, but its doors remain stubbornly closed. While the construction work (both structural and finishing) is complete, one question is on everyone's lips among the followers of the Khadaratoul Malikiya: why is the building still not open to the public?
On the esplanade and in the adjacent alleyways, feelings oscillate between spiritual fervor and incomprehension. With the approach of major religious gatherings, many had hoped to finally be able to offer their prayers within this architectural masterpiece.
But they will have to remain patient despite the official handover of the keys to the general khalifa of the tidians Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour in the presence of state authorities, on February 14, 2024, on the eve of the commemoration of the 2024 edition of Gamou.
“We have been seeing the illuminated minarets and completed facades for months. We are eagerly awaiting the opening of this jewel. The wait is becoming long, but this beautiful mosque honors us,” confides a worshipper who came to take some pictures in front of the beautiful religious building.
"This mosque is our pride. For two years I have always come to take some photos in front of the grand mosque, but I dream of the first time I will set foot inside to pray," recalls another.
This modern, smart and green mosque incorporates state-of-the-art equipment, energy self-sufficiency - work on a 10 MW solar power plant was launched in November 2025 - and a large capacity to accommodate more than 50,000 worshippers.
The Jama'atou Nour Assaniya steering committee and religious authorities maintain that the watchwords remain caution and a demand for perfection. The postponement of the inauguration is not a sign of abandonment, but rather a strict commitment to completing all the technical finishing touches. The steering committee indicates that the final decision rests with the Caliph.
