Tivaouane : Les habitants de Bayti dénoncent les désagréments liés aux travaux d’assainissement
Residents of the Bayti neighborhood in Tivaouane have been facing disruptions for several weeks due to ongoing stormwater drainage work in the city. This Wednesday, they took to the streets to denounce the consequences of the construction and demand urgent action. At the heart of their concerns is the interruption of the drinking water supply.
According to local residents, their taps have been dry for almost a month. This situation is forcing many women to return to the wells to ensure their daily water supply.
Residents believe this situation poses a serious health problem. They claim the well water is not always clean and report cases of diarrhea that have occurred after drinking it. For them, access to drinking water cannot be jeopardized in the name of sanitation work.
Poorly maintained roads and a difficult-to-access neighborhood
Residents of the Bayti neighborhood are also complaining about the deteriorating roads and the difficulties in accessing the area. The construction work has led to the closure of some roads, complicating residents' movements and preventing them from going about their daily lives.
The safety of children is also a source of concern. Residents fear the risks associated with the trenches and ongoing construction work near their homes.
Some homes are even threatened by the excavations carried out for the installation of the pipes. Residents are particularly critical of the company in charge of the project for digging in certain areas without quickly backfilling them.
"Water is a source of life."
But it is above all the drinking water cutoff that has fueled the anger of the residents. They are demanding immediate intervention to restore the supply. "Water is a source of life," they insist, adding that they can no longer continue to live in these conditions. They claim to have already contacted the local and administrative authorities in Tivaouane to find a solution to this situation. To no avail.
The residents of Bayti are now threatening to block the sanitation work in their neighborhood. They say they are determined to go all the way to get the water restored and the construction conditions improved.
While awaiting possible intervention from the authorities and the company in charge of the work, the Bayti district remains faced with a situation which, according to its residents, is becoming increasingly difficult to bear.
