UCAD : La Ville de Dakar lance les travaux d’aménagement du mythique « Couloir de la mort » et de l’axe Claudel
The "Death Corridor" of Cheikh Anta Diop University is about to change its appearance. As part of the partnership between the municipality and the university, the City of Dakar officially launched, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the development and paving works of two major axes of the campus: the legendary "Death Corridor" and the Claudel axis.
The ceremony took place in the presence of the mayor of Dakar, Abass Fall, the rector of UCAD, Alioune Badara Kandji, as well as numerous university, administrative and technical officials.
Spanning over 18,000 m² of paved surfaces, the project includes a comprehensive rehabilitation encompassing road renovation, the creation of cycle paths and sidewalks, the redesign of green spaces, and the installation of new public lighting. Specifically, the work covers two strategic axes. The first extends from the Clairafrique bookstore to the heart of the campus, a distance of 1,550 meters with a paving area of 9,180 m². The second connects bus stop 71, at the canal bridge, to the IFAN building over 1,600 meters, totaling an area of 9,600 m².
In total, 3.15 kilometers of roads, 18,780 m² of paved surfaces, and 6,260 meters of dividing curbs will be deployed to structure the lanes. The main objective is to ensure better and safer coexistence between pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, in line with the "Mobility in Senegal" project launched on July 7th with CETUD.
"To make the path to knowledge more dignified"
In his address, Mayor Abass Fall emphasized the highly symbolic significance of the project. He noted that while the work might initially appear to be a simple road improvement project, its impact is far more profound. The "Corridor of Death" is not infamous for having been the site of deadly events, but rather because it has been traversed daily for decades by dedicated students willing to brave the elements to pursue knowledge. According to him, it is a true battleground against ignorance.
For the city's mayor, improving these infrastructures means making the path to knowledge more dignified, emphasizing that a student should never have to choose between their need to study and their safety. Invoking the history of UCAD and its contribution to the development of national and African elites, Abass Fall reiterated that supporting the university means supporting young people, as every investment in knowledge is a lever for the future.
UCAD, a living space in need of modernization
The rector of UCAD, Alioune Badara Kandji, welcomed the strengthening of inter-institutional cooperation, emphasizing that a university is not limited to lecture halls, laboratories, or libraries. It is first and foremost a living space, and the quality of its facilities is fundamental. He reiterated his thanks to the mayor and his team.
Through this large-scale project, the City of Dakar and the university administration aim to jointly improve mobility, safety, and the campus's landscape while preserving its identity. The project is expected to be fully completed in two months.
