UIDT de Thiès : les étudiants poussent un ouf de soulagement après des années de galère
A sigh of relief for students at Iba Der Thiam University of Thiès (UIDT). Having faced a critical housing shortage on the campus for years, they have finally received new dormitories with 1,000 beds. The infrastructure was officially opened this Thursday by the Minister of Infrastructure, Déthié Fall, along with a 1,000-seat restaurant and a socio-medical complex.
The completion of these facilities marks a significant milestone for students, who have long faced difficult living conditions. While the new buildings had been under construction for some time, their handover had been delayed. This delay had sparked several student protests, with residents of the student housing complex demanding that they be put into service.
Baye Modou Dieng, President of the Conference of UIDT Associations, made no secret of his satisfaction. For him, this reception is the culmination of a long struggle marked by difficult times. "Today is a celebration. It's a celebration because blood was shed, classes were disrupted, and days of suffering were endured to obtain these 1,000-bed wards," he declared.
The student representative also praised the efforts of the various student association presidents who have succeeded one another, as well as the involvement of university authorities in achieving this demand.
Behind this satisfaction lie years of hardship for many students. According to Baye Modou Dieng, some have even abandoned their studies due to a lack of housing, while others are forced to sleep in the corridors of the already overcrowded student residence.
"In one room, you can see 15 or more students sleeping. This does not comply with health standards," he lamented.
With the new buildings now available, students are hoping for a significant improvement in their living and studying conditions. Baye Modou Dieng, however, urged his fellow students to take care of these facilities so that they can benefit the university community for years to come.
For his part, the Minister of Infrastructure, Déthié Fall, also welcomed the arrival of the new facilities intended to strengthen the capacity and services of the social campus. "We have just received pavilions with 1,000 beds, a 1,000-seat restaurant and a socio-medical complex," he stated.
The minister explained that efforts had been accelerated to finalize the work and deliver the infrastructure to students who were eagerly awaiting its availability.
