Mondial 2026 : le New York Times met à l’honneur Sadio Mané
For the 2026 World Cup, held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the New York Times, through its sports division The Athletic, ranked the 200 stars of the competition. Sadio Mané, star of the Senegalese national team, was among those chosen by the American media outlet.
On this ranking divided into 5 branches (legends, superstars, key players, rising stars and unsung heroes), the number 10 of the Lions of Teranga is positioned at the highest rank.
Sadio Mané is indeed among the "Legends," an exclusive circle of the 15 greatest players competing in the 2026 World Cup, including players like Lionel Messi (Argentina), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Harry Kane (England), and Luka Modric (Croatia). Along with Mohamed Salah (Egypt), they are the only two African players in this category.
"Mané is one of the greatest African footballers of all time. Even at 34, now playing for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, his approach to football has remained unchanged. He still displays that youthful exuberance, which has marked his career, in every match," writes The Athletic about the two-time African champion.
Sadio Mané's place in the "Legends" of this 2026 World Cup is even more significant when you know that in the lower category - the superstars - there are players like Kylian Mbappé (France), Erling Haaland (Norway), Ousmane Dembélé (France) or Vinicius Junior (Brazil).
Alongside Sadio Mané in this ranking of the 200 stars of the 2026 World Cup and in other categories, there are 6 other Senegalese players. They are Iliman Ndiaye, Nicolas Jackson, Lamine Camara, Ibrahim Mbaye, Mamadou Sarr and Pape Matar Sarr.
