In South Africa, police arrested a pastor and his wife after raiding a church-run rehabilitation center in Mpumalanga province. Living conditions there were deplorable.

Around 200 people, including children and adults, presumably in treatment for drug addiction, were discovered in the facility on Thursday, October 15, according to local media.

Some prisoners were chained together, while others had untreated wounds.

Inspectors also found overcrowded dormitories, out-of-service toilets and a lack of running water.

The center was operating without authorization, according to authorities.

Officials stated that the pastor and his wife had declared they could only accommodate 60 people. However, the inspection revealed the presence of more than 200 residents, including at least 30 women.

An 11-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were also sharing accommodation with adults.

The Ministry of Social Development specified that residents had to pay 3,000 rand, or about $182, per month.

Nearly half of these fees would be donated to the church.

Following the police raid, 14 people were hospitalized, while 132 others were able to reunite with their families.

The couple are charged with kidnapping and the police are investigating to determine if other offences have been committed.

They are due to appear in court on Monday, October 19.

This case reignites concerns about the growing number of illegal drug rehabilitation centers in South Africa.
