Côte d'Ivoire: 7 morts après des affrontements communautaires liés à un conflit foncier
Seven people died after community clashes linked to a land dispute last week in southeastern Ivory Coast, about 100 kilometers from Abidjan, a public prosecutor who has opened an investigation announced Wednesday evening.
Land disputes are common in this West African country and sometimes lead to deadly violence.
"On Tuesday, August 4, a conflict between members of different communities living in the locality of Kossandji (...) degenerated into violent clashes, which left seven dead and several injured," wrote Naffissiatou Counta, the public prosecutor of the court of Abobo, a commune of Abidjan, in a statement.
"One person is missing and significant material damage has also been recorded," she added.
An investigation has been opened which has "led to the arrest of eighteen people", placed under arrest warrants and charged in particular with "murder, public order disturbances, illegal possession of firearms" and "intentional assault and battery", the prosecutor detailed.
The Ivorian Press Agency (AIP, official) reported last week that the tensions in Kossandji stemmed from a family land dispute.
