Gambia: The Chief of Staff of the Guinea-Bissau Armed Forces visits Banjul

Gambie : Le chef d’Etat major des forces armées de Guinée Bissau en visite à Banjul

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Guinea-Bissau (CEMGFA), Tomas Djassi, arrived in The Gambia on Tuesday evening for a four-day working visit. He was greeted upon arrival by an official delegation from the Gambian Armed Forces (GAF) led by Brigadier General Drammeh.

To deepen military cooperation and strengthen the bonds of fraternity and security between Banjul and Bissau

According to a statement from the Guinea-Bissau embassy in The Gambia, Tomas Djassi's visit aims to deepen military cooperation and strengthen the bonds of fraternity and security between the two countries.

During his stay, the CEMGFA of Guinea Bissau is to hold closed-door meetings with the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Defense Serign Modou Njie, the Inspector General of Police Seedy Mukhtar Touray and the National Security Advisor Abubakarr Jeng.

The discussions will focus primarily on cross-border crime, joint patrols, and training. These issues have become more urgent since instability in Guinea-Bissau has facilitated smuggling and illicit activities along the country's southern border.

The junta has postponed the elections until December 2026.

It must be said that Tomas Djassi's visit to Gambia comes after the decision by the Guinea-Bissau junta to postpone the presidential and legislative elections initially scheduled for December 2026. It believes that the conditions are not met to hold these elections, which are supposed to restore constitutional order.
