Guinée équatoriale : coupure de Facebook et TikTok
Facebook and TikTok have been inaccessible for nearly two weeks in Equatorial Guinea, an AFP journalist observed, after the release of a viral video containing accusations of corruption against the vice-president.
This small authoritarian state in Central Africa, led by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo since 1979, is regularly singled out for its repressive excesses.
Since September 2, internet speeds have been limited and access to the most popular platforms in the country, Facebook and Tiktok, is impossible for Equatorial Guinean users who do not have a virtual private network (VPN).
The other platforms in the Meta group, Whatsapp and Instagram, are working but in a limited way.
This, which appears to be a block by Facebook and TikTok, comes after the release of a viral video of a young woman accusing Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang, also known as Teodorin, the eldest son of the head of state, of corruption.
The person who made this video was subsequently arrested by the authorities.
Known for his luxurious lifestyle which he displays on social media, Teodorin was notably convicted by the French justice system in 2021 in a trial for "ill-gotten gains" and his assets were frozen in the United Kingdom following investigations into corruption.
When contacted, the Equatorial Guinean Minister of Information did not respond to AFP's requests.
In Gabon, neighboring Equatorial Guinea, social networks have been suspended since February, presumably to combat the spread of "content (...) undermining (...) the stability of the institutions of the Republic and national security".
