Lutte contre le tabagisme : La Côte d’Ivoire franchit le cap du paquet neutre
Ivory Coast is tackling the marketing of the tobacco industry. By officially adopting plain packaging for all tobacco products sold in its territory, the country becomes the second African nation, after Mauritius, to implement this measure recommended by the Framework Convention of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The main objective of this reform is to break the visual appeal of cigarettes, particularly to young people and non-smokers. From now on, packaging must meet strict standards: the removal of logos, distinctive colors, and promotional elements, in favor of uniform color, texture, and materials.
This standardization is accompanied by increased visibility for health warnings. By depriving manufacturers of their main advertising tool at points of sale, the authorities intend to curb tobacco initiation among young people.
Welcoming a "major step forward", Bintou Camara Bityeik, vice-president of Africa programs at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, sees it as a strong signal sent to the entire continent.
According to the anti-tobacco NGO, the Ivorian decision proves the effectiveness of regulatory levers against the strategies of industry players and sets a new example in public health in Africa.
