Nigeria : 10 policiers tués dans un affrontement à Kebbi
A particularly deadly clash between Nigerian police and an armed group erupted in Kebbi State, in northwestern Nigeria. Ten police officers, two civilians, and at least 17 suspected assailants were killed, according to a toll released by authorities.
Two other officers were injured and taken to hospital. Security forces deployed reinforcements to the area while the search continues for the members of the group who fled.
A deadly clash near the border with Zamfara
The shooting broke out on Monday, August 10, at around 9:25 a.m., on the Rafin Makuku road in the Sakaba Local Government Area. According to police, officers intercepted a heavily armed group moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
The fighting left ten police officers dead. Two civilians were also killed, and two police officers were wounded. Authorities claim to have killed at least 17 suspected attackers, but specify that this number still needs to be verified.
Armed men were riding motorcycles
The attackers were traveling on motorcycles, a common tactic in rural areas of the country's northwest. Four of their vehicles were burned during the exchange of fire. Police have not confirmed reports that weapons were taken after the confrontation.
The officers killed belonged to a mobile unit deployed on a special mission in the area. Their bodies were taken to Birnin Kebbi. Authorities have promised support to the families and the injured officers.
Northwest Nigeria remains under pressure
In this part of Nigeria, groups described as "bandits" by the authorities are carrying out a growing number of kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and attacks on isolated villages. In July, at least 18 people were killed in attacks in Benue State.
The difficulty in securing vast rural areas also fuels the debate on the organization of law enforcement. In June, the Senate paved the way for the creation of a state police force, a reform presented as a way to bring law enforcement closer to the population.
Reinforcements deployed to Kebbi
Police say they have regained control of the area and launched operations against the fugitives. Their chief, Olatunji Disu, offered his condolences to the families of the slain officers and promised their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
The death toll remains provisional. Authorities have yet to specify the total number of attackers involved and the exact circumstances under which the group was intercepted.
