CEMAC : Retrait des anciennes pièces de CFA
Starting Monday, November 2, 2026, merchants in the six member countries of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) will be authorized to refuse certain categories of old CFA franc coins. The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has indeed formalized the definitive withdrawal of a large series of coins from circulation.
This is a major monetary turning point for Central Africa. The measure adopted by the BEAC applies uniformly to Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Chad. It specifically targets the 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 CFA franc banknotes from these older series.
However, users and savers will not lose the value of their assets. A one-year transition period is officially open from November 1, 2026, to October 31, 2027. Until July 31, 2027, exchanges for coins of the newer series will be free of charge at commercial banks, microfinance institutions, and BEAC branches. During the last three months of the process, only the central bank will be authorized to carry out conversion operations. After October 31, 2027, these coins will no longer be legal tender and can no longer be exchanged.
Harmonize the money supply and eradicate metal trafficking
Through this monetary cleansing, the BEAC aims to restrict market circulation to only contemporary ranges produced in 2006 and 2024. The issuing institution also intends to put a stop to the illegal practice of sharecropping and melting down old coins, whose precious metal is frequently resold on the black market at a price higher than the face value of the currency.
A massive plan to address the shortage of small change
Through this operation, the central bank also seeks to address the recurring shortage of small change, a phenomenon that paralyzes everyday transactions in the sub-region. To facilitate retail trade, the issuing institution plans to inject 500 million new coins per year, with the objective of reaching a stock of three billion coins in circulation by 2030.
