Hungary: Hospital employee arrested with human remains at home

The 30-year-old man allegedly recovered body parts from his hospital and abandoned cemeteries.

A gruesome case has shaken Hungary. A 30-year-old man, employed as a stretcher-bearer in a Budapest hospital, was arrested after human remains were discovered at his home and, according to investigators, at his workplace.

The arrest took place on June 17 in Budapest's second district. Investigators had received information that the suspect was possessing human body parts. After several checks, they searched locations associated with the man, as well as his vehicle.

Police then seized several disturbing items: skulls, bones packed in a suitcase, a complete leg, a hand, and prepared facial skin. A heart preserved in a jar was also found. Authorities have yet to determine whether it is a human or animal organ.

Abandoned cemeteries in the crosshairs

According to initial findings of the investigation, the suspect allegedly collected some of the remains through his work at the hospital. He is also suspected of having exhumed bodies from abandoned cemeteries in Hungary and Slovakia.

Investigators also seized computer equipment, including computers, tablets, phones, and SIM cards. This equipment should help them understand the extent of his activities and identify any other potential offenses.

The suspect confessed to the crime.

During his interrogation, the man reportedly admitted to collecting these body parts. He explained that he was particularly interested in anatomy and pathology, and that he had already prepared and consumed food made from some of the remains.

He is currently facing charges related to the illegal use of human bodies. Following his detention, the Hungarian justice system ordered him placed under judicial supervision.

The seized remains must now be examined by forensic experts. Their task will be to determine their exact origin. According to investigators, the charges could be expanded if the analysis reveals further evidence.
