Huit pays à majorité musulmane accusent Israël d'être responsable de l'incendie de mosquées en Cisjordanie
Eight Muslim-majority countries, including regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Turkey, on Thursday accused Israel of being responsible for the arson attacks the previous day against two mosques in the occupied West Bank, which Palestinian officials blamed on Israeli settlers.
The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey "hold Israel - as the occupying power - responsible for these attacks," they said in a joint statement, condemning "the continuation and escalation of settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank."
Groups of Israeli settlers set fire to two mosques in the West Bank on Wednesday, according to local Palestinian officials. AFP journalists observed damage at one of the two sites.
When contacted by AFP, the Israeli army, which has occupied the West Bank since 1967, said it "strongly condemns incidents of this type", mentioning an "investigation".
In the mosque in Jiljiliya (central), an AFP team observed traces of fire and vandalism, including Hebrew inscriptions on the charred walls, including "Greetings from the hill youth" (a radical Jewish settler movement).
The other fire broke out in the village of al-Mazraa al-Noubani, less than ten kilometers away, according to Saad Dagher, the mayor of that locality.
Not counting East Jerusalem, occupied and annexed by Israel, more than 500,000 Israelis now live in the West Bank in settlements deemed illegal by the UN, amidst some three million Palestinians.
According to figures published last week by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank is currently reaching a "record" pace, with an average of six attacks per day resulting in casualties and damage.
