Pour l'Iran, le protocole conclu avec les Etats-Unis est "la déclaration de défaite de l'Amérique"
The memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States to end the war is "America's declaration of defeat," said Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, head of the Iranian negotiating team, on Wednesday.
"The Islamabad memorandum of understanding is not the result of pressure or coercion, but rather of the resistance and determination of the courageous Iranian nation," he said, referring to the text signed last week thanks to Pakistan's mediation.
"That is why (this agreement) has taken on the value of a declaration of defeat for America," stressed the influential Mr. Ghalibaf, adding that security in the Middle East must now be ensured by the countries of the region.
"We consider the withdrawal of foreign forces from the region as a strategic objective" because "far from creating lasting security, they constitute a source of instability," insisted the man who is also the president of Parliament.
He was speaking from Baku, Azerbaijan, at a conference broadcast on Iranian television.
The United States maintains numerous military bases in the Middle East. The countries hosting these bases were targeted by Iranian drone and missile attacks during the war in retaliation for the bombing of Iran by the American and Israeli militaries.
"We see the future of the region not in confrontation, but in interaction," said Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in what looked like an olive branch to neighboring Gulf countries.
The chief negotiator for the talks with the United States also reiterated that peace in Lebanon was a fundamental point towards a final agreement with Washington.
"For us, the ceasefire in Lebanon was and remains as important as the ceasefire in Iran, and the end of the war in Lebanon was as important as the end of the war in Iran," he insisted.
