Royaume-Uni : le gouvernement instaure un couvre-feu numérique pour les adolescents afin de limiter leur utilisation des réseaux sociaux
The British government continues its series of measures concerning the restriction of the use of social networks among teenagers by banning them from a certain hour for 16-17 year olds.
After a certain hour, British teenagers will no longer be able to scroll through TikTok, Instagram, X, or YouTube. This is the latest government decision, announced on Tuesday, July 14, complementing the Labour Party's plan to reduce social media use among young people.
Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds will have their apps blocked between midnight and 6 a.m. However, there's a catch. Since it's impossible to truly control users' phones, they will still have the option to configure their apps and bypass this digital curfew.
The measure will be effective from next year, simultaneously with other measures taken on the subject in recent weeks.
Regaining sleep and concentration
"Even though young people gain more autonomy at 16, they still need to be protected from the most addictive online features, which can have a detrimental impact on their well-being," said Digital Minister Liz Kendall, quoted in a statement.
"These measures will be crucial in helping young people get the sleep they need, focus on school and studies, and spend more quality time with their family and friends," she added.
In recent weeks, the British government has stepped up its efforts to reduce social media use among teenagers. As recently as Monday, July 13, London imposed restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence chatbots. Those under 18 will be required to take regular breaks when using these platforms.
In June, it was announced that these apps would be banned for those under 16. The government is also considering requiring addictive platforms to install default settings that would render them unusable for 16-18 year olds.
As more and more studies highlight the dangers and negative effects of social media, particularly on mental health and addiction, many countries are considering taking similar measures. Australia has already taken this step, and France, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates are currently preparing legislation on the subject.
