Un opposant au président russe Vladimir Poutine abattu en Pologne
A Russian artist known for his criticism of President Vladimir Putin was shot dead in Poland.
Robert Kuzovkov, a Kremlin opposition figure also known by his stage name Semion Skrepetski, was first hit by two shots Monday morning by an armed man who approached him in the town of Biała Podlaska, in eastern Poland, near the Belarusian border, according to authorities and local media.
"When the victim fell to the ground, the perpetrator approached, fired three more shots, and then quickly fled," said Marcin Kozak, spokesman for the Lublin District Prosecutor's Office. At least one of the five shots struck him in the head.
"Robert K. died instantly," confirmed Mr. Kozak.
Two Belarusians have been arrested, but no charges have been filed against them so far. Their possible role in the shooting remains unclear.
The 44-year-old artist was murdered three days after participating in a demonstration in Berlin on the occasion of "Russia Day," which celebrates the country's declaration of sovereignty before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the independent media outlet Meduza reported.
"The victim engaged in public artistic activities and used, among other things, the pseudonym Semion Skrepetski, under which she expressed her criticism of the current policies of the authorities of the Russian Federation," said Mr. Kozak, spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
