Décès de Cheikh Hamidou Kane : PASTEF rend hommage à une figure majeure du Sénégal

Patriots bow before the memory of writer and former high-ranking state official Cheikh Hamidou Kane, who passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 98. PASTEF salutes the memory of a "wise man and builder," whose life and work profoundly marked Senegal and African literature.

In a tribute, PASTEF–The Patriots emphasizes the exceptional nature of Cheikh Hamidou Kane's life, presenting him as "one of Senegal's most illustrious sons." The party particularly highlights his major work, "Ambiguous Adventure," translated into some thirty languages. Through this novel, Cheikh Hamidou Kane explored questions related to identity, transmission, culture, and the encounter between different worlds. For PASTEF, the book transcends the literary realm to constitute "a spiritual heritage" passed down to future generations.

PASTEF also recalls the administrative and political career of Cheikh Hamidou Kane. Governor of Thiès, he then served as Minister of Planning under the President of the Council, Mamadou Dia.

The party emphasizes his loyalty to his convictions and his commitment to serving the state, presenting him as "a loyal companion and a man of conviction, who remained faithful to his ideals through the trials of history."

His international career is also mentioned. Cheikh Hamidou Kane notably held high-level positions within UNICEF where, according to PASTEF, he continued to serve Senegal with "rigor, humility and consistency".

For PASTEF, the deceased's trajectory reminds us that "fidelity to principles does not exclude either a sense of public duty or openness to the world."

The party believes that his life and work constitute a source of inspiration for present and future generations, especially for those who work in service to Senegal and Africa.
