Disparition de Cheikh Hamidou Kane : L’APR salue la mémoire d’un « patrimoine vivant de l’humanité »
The Alliance for the Republic (APR) reacted with "deep sadness" to the announcement of the passing of Cheikh Hamidou Kane, who died on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 98. Macky Sall's party paid tribute to a major figure in the political, intellectual, and literary history of Senegal and Africa.
“Cheikh Hamidou Kane dedicated his life from a very early age to the struggle for the independence, sovereignty, and dignity of our people. A high-ranking civil servant and later a minister, he embodied rigor and devotion to the service of the State and played his full part in building an independent Senegal. Cheikh Hamidou Kane was also an immense literary and intellectual figure. His novel "Ambiguous Adventure," a masterpiece of contemporary world literature, has marked generations of readers with its rigorous handling of questions relating to identity and cultural mixing, now at the heart of the issues of our time,” states the APR.
A senior civil servant and later a minister, Cheikh Hamidou Kane is presented as a servant of the State who embodied rigor and dedication in the building of independent Senegal.
The APR also emphasizes the literary and intellectual dimension of his career. His major work, L'Aventure ambiguë, is described as a "masterpiece of contemporary world literature," having influenced several generations through its reflection on identity, transmission, and cultural mixing.
For the APR, Cheikh Hamidou Kane embodied an alliance between attachment to traditional values and openness to modern knowledge.
“With him, Senegal loses a talented writer, an exceptional statesman, and an intellectual whose grounding in traditional values did not prevent him from embracing modern knowledge. Because Cheikh Hamidou Kane was a living heritage of humanity and his contribution to Senegal is invaluable, President Macky Sall decided in 2023 to rename the Virtual University of Senegal (UVS) the “Cheikh Hamidou Kane Digital University” (UN-CHK). He also awarded the writer the Grand Prize of the Head of State for Literature, for his entire body of work,” the party emphasizes.
In paying tribute to the memory of the man it describes as a "living heritage of humanity", the APR extends its sincere condolences to his family, his loved ones and to the entire Senegalese nation, which, according to it, has just lost "one of its most illustrious sons".
