Al Aminou Lô : « On peut faire beaucoup de surenchères, mais à la fin de la journée, j’ai… »
Prime Minister Al Aminou Lô remains optimistic about the outcome of the standoff surrounding the supplementary budget bill, which was rejected on October 23 by Pastef party members of parliament. When questioned by RFI and France 24 about the position of Ousmane Sonko, the current Speaker of the National Assembly and his predecessor as Prime Minister, who announced that Pastef MPs would not vote for the bill, the head of government called for prioritizing the nation's best interests.
"That's politics. You can make a lot of one-upmanship, but at the end of the day, I have always liked, in this country, the fact that the greater interest of the Nation will prevail, that everyone will come to their senses," said Al Aminou Lô.
To bolster his optimism, the head of government cites Senegal's resilience, particularly during the political crisis of 2021-2024. "Senegal has demonstrated its resilience in much more serious cases, notably during the 2021-2024 political crisis, which ended with a dialogue between opponents and tough adversaries," he recalled.
Returning to the relationship between the Executive and the President of the National Assembly, Al Aminou Lô emphasizes that the current situation is not a classic political adversity.
“Here, we are not in adversity. It is the same party which, at one point, experienced constraints which led the President of the Republic to part ways with this Prime Minister who was going to play a very, very important role in the National Assembly: controlling public action,” he explained, referring to Ousmane Sonko’s departure from the Prime Minister’s office.
Regarding the threat of parliamentary deadlock, the Prime Minister acknowledges his predecessor's institutional role, while downplaying the scope of his position.
"Today, yes, he is in his role, but it may be overbidding, a temporary blockage, certainly due to misunderstandings," he said.
