«Double tranchant» : Sonko vise Macky Sall et Diomaye Faye
In an interview with Walfadjri, journalist and political analyst Ibrahima Bakhoum described Pastef's use of parliamentary inquiry commissions to question the management of former officials of Macky Sall's regime as a "double-edged sword." While acknowledging the legitimacy of parliamentary oversight, he denounced the risks of political score-settling and questioned the objectives of this approach.
A legitimate power of control based on principle
Ibrahima Bakhoum points out that "the National Assembly has the power to oversee government action." He therefore does not dispute the principle of commissions of inquiry, which allow for holding former officials accountable for the management of public resources. However, he warns against the political motives that their conduct may reveal. "Pastef wants to be transparent, but at the same time gives the impression of settling scores," he asserts.
The analyst also highlights the risks associated with the public exposure of those questioned, whose reputations can be damaged even before their responsibilities are established by the justice system. "It is the staging […] of these hearings that raises questions," he observes.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the crosshairs
According to Ibrahima Bakhoum, Pastef's strategy could extend beyond simply implicating former dignitaries of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) and also target President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. By exposing the alleged practices of officials from the former regime who joined the presidential movement, the party is seeking to embarrass the head of state. The analyst summarizes this logic with the phrase: "Those who defect to Kiraay don't have clean hands."
The interlocutor of the Front de terre press group also believes that the commissions offer Pastef a new platform to mobilize its militants, while the legal proceedings initiated against former officials have not produced the results hoped for by Ousmane Sonko's party.
