Fissure au sommet du pouvoir : Pourquoi les prochaines élections seront « celles de la clarification », selon Maurice Soudieck Dione
The political rivalry between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the parliamentary majority led by Ousmane Sonko has reached a new level. According to analyses shared by RTS, these growing tensions are transforming the upcoming elections into a true test of representativeness and the balance of power at the highest levels of government.
Speaking about the country's political situation, Associate Professor of Political Science Maurice Soudieck Dione emphasized the need to clean up the institutional landscape. "There is a rift between the presidential majority and the parliamentary majority," the professor and researcher observed on RTS radio, stressing that this gap directly undermines the stability of the executive branch.
According to the analyst, if the deadlock persists, the decision must inevitably be made by the Senegalese people: "If the President of the Republic can no longer rely on the majority in place, he cannot govern. In a way, this conflict between the executive and the legislative branch must be resolved by the electorate," he argues.
While the possibility of holding early legislative and territorial elections simultaneously is being debated, Maurice Soudieck Dione expresses strong reservations. "Local elections are special elections. They are not national elections," the political scientist stated, as reported by RTS.
According to him, superimposing these two elections would not only complicate the choice of citizens in the face of distinct territorial and national issues, but would also pose an immense logistical and financial challenge in a very tight institutional calendar.
But beyond the timetable, it is the specter of a widespread deadlock that worries observers. Referring to the bills under discussion and the threats of no-confidence motions brandished by Ousmane Sonko, Maurice Soudieck Dione warns: "If we want to reform certain major issues without the approval of the President of the Republic, naturally, we are heading towards a conflict between the executive and legislative branches."
The legal and political confrontation between the two institutions risks tipping over: "All this can lead to tensions and result in an institutional crisis at the top of the state," the political scientist warned on the public media.
