"L'arroseur arrosé" : Mary Teuw Niane tombe à bras raccourcis sur Ousmane Sonko
In a scathing op-ed titled "The Biter Bit," Professor Mary Teuw Niane, Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic, launches a scathing attack on Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly and leader of Pastef. Following the majority's rejection of the draft budget in committee and the ultimatums issued to block the 2027 Finance Law and the 2027 Initial Finance Law, the author denounces an attempt to hold the Republic hostage and a perverse obsession to sabotage President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye's term. Seneweb presents the full text.
He had gathered the cream of his sect. Confident, brimming with self-assurance, and intoxicated by his own eloquence, he launched into a show of force, multiplying peremptory pronouncements, even going so far as to disavow, without the slightest qualm, what he had maintained only yesterday when he led the government. Consistency could wait; ambition, however, never does.
So, with the arrogance of someone who believes he is in control, he threw his ultimatum in the face of the stunned Senegalese: no vote on the amending finance bill (LFR), no vote on the initial finance bill (LFI) 2027, if the government did not agree to negotiate with him and comply with his demands.
He believed he had found his ultimate weapon, the coup de grâce that would finally derail the presidential program and bring the government to its knees. He was already jubilant. In his mind, the Republic had become a chessboard on which he could move the pieces as he pleased, and the destiny of an entire people, a bargaining chip in the service of his personal ambitions.
What a sense of duty! What a commitment to the common good!
At the very moment when Senegal is striving to reconnect with its creditors, restore its economic and financial credibility, and regain the trust of partners whose relations with our country have deteriorated considerably as a consequence of his uncontrolled statements and actions, he chooses to fan the flames. Instead of contributing to national recovery, he brandishes the threat of gridlock. Instead of serving the Republic, he would like to hold it hostage.
In fact, at the bottom, everything seems to come down to one obsession: President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye must not succeed in his mandate.
Has his success become, in his eyes, an unbearable personal defeat?
Is this President's rise to the highest office a wound from which he cannot heal?
Everything seems to be happening as if Senegal's success could only be envisaged on the condition that it is itself the architect, the conductor and, above all, the political beneficiary.
Traps, schemes, dirty tricks, ultimatums: all means seem justified. Only one thing matters: power, absolute power. Not simply participating in the conduct of public affairs, but setting the pace, dictating the terms, and deciding who can govern, how, and under what conditions.
The Republic cannot be held hostage to the frustrations of one man, any more than Senegal can be the property of personal ambition.
Does he believe in God? The question may seem harsh. But how can we not wonder when political zeal seems to take precedence over concern for the common good, when the conquest of power seems to justify all artifices, and when the higher interest of the nation is relegated behind the calculations of one man?
Yet, recent history has already taught us a lesson: every time he thought he had the country under his control, every time he believed he had found the decisive lever to impose his will, reality ultimately thwarted his calculations. He thought he held the upper hand; he was only holding onto thin air. He proclaimed victory; he was preparing his own downfall. By trying to control everything, he ends up clashing with what is beyond his grasp: reality, the conscience of the citizens, and the strength of the Republic.
And that's precisely where our chance lies.
God has blessed Senegal. Our saints, our religious leaders, our wise men, and our people have prayed fervently for peace, stability, and the preservation of our shared destiny. We are fortunate to live in this remarkable democratic, peaceful, and republican exception: that of a country which, despite tensions, provocations, and the onslaught of discord, continues to stand strong, to preserve its institutions, and to ensure, beyond passions, the continuity of the State.
Let us not be mistaken: this stability is neither a coincidence nor an irreversible achievement. Built upon history, a political culture, a national consciousness and a deep aspiration for peace, it is also the result of the prayers, sacrifices and wisdom of generations of Senegalese men and women who know that no individual ambition is worth jeopardizing our common home.
Once again, the facts will ultimately speak for themselves. The veils of disinformation will be torn away, the fog of falsehoods will dissipate, and the Senegalese people will be able to judge for themselves. Then, the two ultimatums, brandished with such arrogance as weapons of political destruction, will naturally deflate, like balloons deprived of air. The noise will have been immense; the result, derisory. The threats will have shattered against the wall of reality.
This country, Senegal, is not a banana republic.
Our Constitution is not a scrap of paper to be waved or torn up according to whims. Our Republic rests on institutions, rules, and balances that cannot bend to anyone's caprices. The institutions of the Republic are greater than the people who serve them, more enduring than the ambitions that permeate them, and stronger than the maneuvers of those who would seek to divert them from their purpose.
A democracy does not prohibit criticism, opposition, or disagreement. On the contrary, it requires that everyone be able to defend their convictions and exercise their responsibilities. But it cannot confuse debate with blackmail, negotiation with submission, or political freedom with the right to hold the country hostage.
We must therefore maintain confidence. Not in the infallibility of men, but in the strength of our institutions, in the maturity of our people, and in our collective ability to thwart attempts at destabilization.
For there is a truth that would-be strategists of destabilization always end up discovering: the trap one sets for the Republic can become the one in which one sets oneself. By constantly trying to corner the adversary, one can end up backing oneself into a corner. By constantly manipulating the facts, one ends up exposing oneself to their verdict. By constantly trying to pelt others with mud, one sometimes ends up getting splashed oneself.
That's the whole lesson of the biter bit.
Such is the Republic, in its trials as in its victories. Such is Senegal, standing tall, sovereign, and resolved to continue on its path.
Senegal will survive the ambitions of men. The Republic will survive the machinations. And history, implacable as ever, will ultimately separate those who have served the country from those who have sought to exploit it.

Musulmans?
