The relationship between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko was discussed in an interview with the media outlet Impact SN. The writer believes that the head of state has faced a legitimacy issue since coming to power. He considers that this situation influences how he carries out his duties and his political choices. When asked about a possible desire on the part of the president to assert his authority, Boubacar Boris Diop replied that the origin of this difficulty lies in the process that led Bassirou Diomaye Faye to the highest office. "Unfortunately for him, he will be condemned, like any head of the executive branch, to exercise power according to the way he acquired it. Diomaye's original sin will always be Sonko's overbearing gesture asking the Senegalese people to vote for him," he stated.
The essayist believes this reality creates a delicate situation from a psychological point of view. "It's very uncomfortable, from a psychological point of view; you have to be very mentally strong or completely indifferent to honors to live comfortably with it. But one gets the impression that this obvious lack of legitimacy weighs so heavily on Diomaye that he keeps trying to compensate for it by overplaying his presidential role," he continues.
Boubacar Boris Diop then addressed the workings of the presidency. He asserted that the head of state places particular importance on symbols of authority. He specifically cited the photographs circulated during the signing of decrees. "He is said to be obsessed with protocol, and I believe someone should advise him against systematically having himself photographed signing decrees, just to remind the administrative and political elites of this country that he is the boss," he stated. According to him, this practice contrasts sharply with that of previous presidents of the Republic, who nevertheless possessed the same prerogatives. He reiterated that the power of appointment is one of the normal prerogatives of the head of state.
The author also believes that current political events give the impression that appointments and dismissals play a significant role in presidential action. He clarifies, however, that these decisions fall within the president's purview. "In the context of the conflict with Sonko, it seems as though he spends all his time appointing and firing. Yes, he is indeed fulfilling his role, it's even very important, but the fate of a few thousand senior officials should perhaps be put into perspective when considering the destiny of twenty million Senegalese," he says.
When asked whether this attitude reflects a form of fragility, Boubacar Boris Diop responds bluntly: "I think we can say that." The writer believes that the constraints of exercising power could lead Bassirou Diomaye Faye to make choices far removed from his initial convictions. He believes that the imperatives of maintaining power often end up overriding personal positions. He goes further when he discusses the influence of the "system" on the president. "In my view, there is no doubt about it. But it's not the first time that a head of state has found himself held hostage by political and social actors as powerful as they are invisible. It is nonetheless astonishing that he was able to be turned so easily," he asserts.
Boubacar Boris Diop finally questions the extent of the change observed since Bassirou Diomaye Faye came to power. He puts forward two hypotheses. The first is based on a development that occurred after his election. "What if, on the contrary, he had always been able to conceal his true intentions?" he asks. The second hypothesis, which is almost dizzying, is terrifying, but we are forced to put it on the table, even if in the end it will become one of those enigmas that historians know how to solve. I believe that only they will be able to shed light on this particular point in the future," he says.
