Vie chère : Abdoulaye Vilane demande des résultats concrets
The high cost of living has become a daily reality for Senegalese people. At the market, in shops, when faced with electricity bills, or when paying rent, households directly feel the burden of these expenses. For those whose incomes are not increasing at the same rate, it is sometimes necessary to reassess priorities and reduce certain expenses.
Faced with this situation, successive governments have announced various measures to try to alleviate the burden on Senegalese consumers. The current government is also following this approach.
But for Abdoulaye Vilane, spokesperson for the Socialist Party (opposition), the time is above all to assess the real impact of these measures on families.
In a note devoted to the issue, he relies in particular on the report from the roundtable of June 29, 2026 on the auditing of invoices and prices. He identifies a central problem: Senegal already has several mechanisms to regulate prices, but their implementation on the ground remains insufficient.
Rules that must be applied
For Mr. Vilane, the problem is therefore not simply multiplying decisions, but ensuring their implementation. Water, electricity, hydrocarbons, certain food products, and transportation are already subject to pricing or certification regulations. "An announced price reduction only makes sense when it actually appears in shops and markets," he believes.
The Socialist leader is therefore calling for stricter controls and better coordination among the services responsible for ensuring price compliance. He also wants consumers to have easier access to official prices and to report any discrepancies.
Better explain electricity bills
The issue of transparency also features prominently in his thinking, particularly regarding electricity billing and the Woyofal system. He believes that consumers' questions must be answered with simple and accessible explanations. He clarifies that it's not about "asserting the existence of an anomaly without proof," but about enabling everyone to understand what they are actually paying for.
Simulations and better information on billing mechanisms could, according to him, help to clear up misunderstandings and detect potential malfunctions.
Produce more to reduce costs
But Abdoulaye Vilane believes that the fight against the high cost of living cannot stop at price controls. Behind the costs borne by consumers are also the expenses related to production, transport, energy, taxation and imports.
The socialist therefore advocates for action across the entire economic chain: supporting SMEs, improving distribution, facilitating access to financing, strengthening competition, and above all, further developing local production. "Purchasing power policy must therefore be linked to a genuine production policy," he argues.
According to the spokesperson for the Socialist Party, producing more in Senegal would reduce certain dependencies and, in the long term, create the conditions for a more sustainable reduction in costs.
In the end, Abdoulaye Vilane urges people to look at the results rather than the announcements. "The government should be judged on the real effects of its measures, not on its pronouncements," he asserts. He summarizes his approach with a few priorities: enforcing the rules, protecting consumers, strengthening controls, penalizing abuses, and supporting domestic production.
Because, according to him, "the fight against the high cost of living will not be won by press releases," but by measures that translate concretely into the daily lives of households.
