Bouillons et maladies cardiovasculaires : Un fabricant réfute les allégations portées contre ses produits
Questions surrounding salt consumption and cardiovascular risks continue to fuel the debate. Industrial seasonings are at the forefront of this debate, regularly singled out by a segment of the public.
Nestlé Senegal responded to this concern by highlighting its policy of compliance and nutritional improvement.
“Compliance is at the heart of our business conduct principles,” says Nazly Coumba Niang, head of communications and public relations at Nestlé Senegal during an open day.
According to her, the company is committed to respecting national laws, but also international regulations that govern its activities.
On the sensitive issue of salt, the manager assures that the maximum permitted level in seasonings is set at 55%. She maintains that her company has been undertaking a review of its recipes for several years.
“Since 2017, we have voluntarily reduced the salt content of our various seasonings. It now varies between 48% and 53%, which is below the threshold recommended by the Senegalese standard,” she explains.
The company also emphasizes the usage guidelines for its products. It recommends one Maggi tablet for a meal for three people and two tablets for six people, without adding salt, believing that following these instructions contributes to appropriate consumption.
Another argument put forward is regulatory controls. "All our products are controlled by the competent state bodies before being put on the market. Analyses are systematically carried out by the authorized institutions," affirms Nazly Coumba Niang.
The manager added that Nestlé Senegal has not, to date, been subject to any product recalls. She attributes this to compliance with regulatory requirements and applicable standards.
These statements come at a time when issues related to the nutritional quality of processed foods, salt reduction and the prevention of non-communicable diseases are playing an increasingly important role in public health policies in Senegal.
