The diphtheria epidemic continues to rage in Senegal. As of October 18, 2026, 368 cases have been confirmed in 60 health districts spread across 13 regions, with a death toll of 14, including two new deaths recorded since the previous press release, according to the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene.
The most affected regions are Thiès (33 cases), Kédougou (35), Matam (29), Dakar (53), Louga (42), Diourbel (44), Kaolack (48) and Tambacounda (26).
Diphtheria is an infectious and contagious disease that can be prevented by vaccination. Symptoms include a sore throat, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness, and swelling of the neck.
In response to the situation, the Ministry of Health is urging parents to check their children's vaccination status and to administer any missing doses, if necessary. It also recommends seeking prompt medical attention at the first sign of symptoms and avoiding self-medication.
