Accusations d'escroquerie à la tontine : Awa Kaba « Mamy » brise le silence, reconnaît 26 millions de dette et s'explique
Accused of embezzlement, tontine manager Awa Kaba (alias "Mamy") gives her version of events. While categorically denying any intention to defraud or fleeing to China, she acknowledges management errors related to unpaid debts of nearly 100 million FCFA and pledges to reimburse the victims. Here is the full text of her statement:
“For some time now, I have been managing several tontines, particularly those involving building materials, money, gold, and land. It is important to point out that these different activities do not encounter the same difficulties.”

Regarding the golden tontine, there are currently no outstanding debts. The same applies to land, an activity I undertake, notably as a service provider and commission-based partner with Immosen l'Excellence Immobilier.
Regarding the building materials tontine, the commitments made to the participants have been largely respected. The materials are being delivered throughout Senegal, including the most remote areas, as well as in The Gambia, and the participants concerned have received their materials.
The difficulty relates exclusively to the money tontine. To date, three people are still waiting for payment of their sums, for a total amount of 26 million CFA francs: two people for 5 million each and a third for 16 million CFA francs.
I want to say this with complete sincerity: I acknowledge that there were errors in the management of this business and I take full responsibility for them. I managed several businesses simultaneously, and certain situations gradually created imbalances in the cash flow.
Furthermore, some participants stopped contributing after receiving their money or equipment, which significantly exacerbated management difficulties. This situation created a substantial deficit, estimated at nearly 100 million CFA francs, which inevitably impacted the savings and loan scheme.
But poor management, however regrettable, does not mean an intention to swindle or deceive the people who trusted me.
I fully understand the anger, worry, and disappointment of those still waiting for their money. I also understand that when someone is waiting for several million CFA francs, explanations alone are not always enough to allay their concerns. That is why I am neither trying to shirk my responsibilities nor denying the difficulties we are facing.
I sincerely apologize to all the people to whom I still owe money.
These are people who placed their trust in me. Some participated in several of my savings groups, recommended me to their friends and family, and even helped grow my community. For many of us, our relationships were built on trust and respect. That's precisely why this situation hurts me so deeply.
I am aware of the responsibility that is mine and I sincerely regret having disappointed people who had placed their trust in me.
I would also like to clarify something important regarding my stay in China. I did not go there to shirk my responsibilities or to escape those to whom I owe money. I am in China to develop and expand my business. My goal is precisely to strengthen my financial and professional capabilities so that I can meet my obligations as quickly as possible.
I know that some may have difficulty understanding this, but I am simply asking to be judged on my actions and on the efforts I am currently making to find solutions.
I don't claim to have been perfect in managing my businesses. I made mistakes and I acknowledge them. But I categorically reject the idea that I set up these businesses with the aim of scamming people.
I have a large community, a significant portion of which has always been satisfied with my services. My goal has never been to satisfy only a part of this community; my ambition has always been to achieve 100% satisfaction among participants and to maintain the trust they have placed in me.
I come from a well-known and respected family, and I grew up in an environment where keeping one's word and honoring commitments were always highly valued. My father is himself known and respected by many people. This situation is therefore far from insignificant for me or my family.
Today, I am not trying to portray myself as a victim. I am simply asking that the situation be presented accurately and without conflating my different activities.
I owe money to some people. I acknowledge it. I accept it. And I work to pay them back.
I therefore ask all those concerned to show a little more patience and understanding. Every day, I am looking for solutions to gradually reduce this deficit and honor the remaining commitments.
To those who trusted me yesterday, to those who are still waiting today, I want to say one thing: I don't forget anyone.
I deeply regret this situation and I ask forgiveness from all the people I may have put in a difficult situation.
My wish is to gradually settle the sums owed, to learn from this experience and to put in place a much more rigorous management so that such a situation does not happen again.
Finally, I hope that this right of reply will be understood not as an attempt at justification, but as an act of responsibility, transparency and respect towards all the people who have placed their trust in me.
I remain determined to find a solution to this situation and to honor my commitments to the very end.
