The National Police issued a warning on Friday, October 9, 2026, about a widespread scam targeting users of mobile financial services. The alert was included in a press release from the General Directorate of the National Police, published by the Communication and Public Relations Division, under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security. It is titled "Alert on a Widespread Financial Services Scam Campaign Using Malware."
The modus operandi of fraudsters
According to the National Police, malicious apps or deceptive links allow criminals to discreetly steal the PIN codes of mobile financial service users. Once these credentials are stolen, the fraudsters take control of the victims' Mobile Money accounts. They then carry out illicit money transfers, described as "undetectable," directly from the victims' phones.
Vigilance guidelines
Faced with this threat, the National Police are urging the public to exercise extreme caution. They recommend not downloading any applications from dubious sources, especially those received via instant messaging apps or social media. They also advise against clicking on any suspicious links, whether they promise matches, movies, or easy money. Finally, citizens are urged to disregard any such solicitations.
Investigations are underway
The National Police wish to reassure citizens. They indicate that thorough investigations are currently being conducted by their competent services in order to track down, identify and arrest the perpetrators of these criminal acts.
How to report an offense
The statement specifies that the police are and remain mobilized to protect the public. It encourages citizens to report any cybercrime on the platform https://signalementcyber.dgpn.sn/ . They can also contact the police free of charge at 17 or 800 00 17 00 for any useful information.
The statement is signed by Police Commissioner Mamadou DIOUF, head of the Communication Division of the General Directorate of the National Police.
