« Combien de femmes devront encore mourir ? » : 9e féminicide en huit mois, WaxJotna interpelle l'État
The femicide of Ndèye Bigué Sène, 20 years old, "found dead on Saturday, August 22 in the bush of the Séico district in Tivaouane", brings to nine the number of publicized femicides recorded in Senegal since January 2026, according to the count by WaxJotna.
In response to this tragedy, the collective issued a strong statement: “Another woman killed. Another family grieving. Another life brutally cut short.” Beyond the sheer number, this latest case raises a crucial question of public interest: how many acts of violence must precede a murder before a woman is truly protected?
For feminist organizations, counting victims cannot constitute a sustainable policy for combating the problem. "Naming femicides is necessary. Counting them is necessary. But that is not enough," the organization emphasizes, recalling that these acts are not "a succession of isolated incidents," but rather "the most extreme expression of violence against women."
Every murder must prompt an examination of previous violence, alert systems, victim support, and the capacity of the justice system and public services to prevent the worst. These crimes "are part of a continuum of violence, power dynamics, and social mechanisms that enable the dehumanization and normalization of violence against women."
Following the double femicide of July 9th and 10th, the death of Ndèye Bigué Sène has brought the urgent need for a structural response back to the forefront. Offering condolences to the victim's family, WaxJotna challenges the government: "How many more women will have to be killed before this emergency is finally treated as such?"
To this end, the organization reiterates its major demands: the recognition of femicide as a specific crime in the Senegalese Penal Code; the implementation of public policies for prevention and protection adapted to violence against women; the strengthening of the judicial response to violence against women and girls.
Nine women in eight months: shouldn't the true indicator of the urgency be the number of lives saved rather than the number of women killed?
