The Thiès Regional Hygiene Brigade, concerned about the persistent issue of sanitation in the railway city, has invited property owners to pay more attention to the construction and capacity of septic tanks.
The brigade commander, Chief Warrant Officer Damien Ndione, points out that a properly designed and sufficiently large pit can function for several years before needing to be emptied. Conversely, he notes, a small pit, even a watertight one, may require much more frequent emptying.
The Hygiene Brigade particularly emphasizes the watertightness of the installation, its size, and its accessibility to septic tank emptying trucks. "A poorly designed or leaky septic tank can cause leaks and promote groundwater contamination," warns Mr. Ndione.
He reassures that the Hygiene Department also takes samples from certain wells and boreholes in order to control the quality of the water and in particular to look for the possible presence of fecal coliforms.
He also cited a recently reported case of sewage backup between two houses. The owner involved was fined 200,000 FCFA. A report was filed for the judicial investigation.
