Guédiawaye: Alcohol, drugs, and broken bottles – the brawl turns ugly



A violent brawl between two young men recently released from prison left one person seriously injured on Sunday in Nimzatt 2, in the Ndiarème Limamoulaye district of Guédiawaye. A. Dia, 28, and B. Dièye, 34, clashed amidst alcohol and drugs, according to L'Observateur.

The two men had already argued on Saturday night. Their friends and family managed to separate them. But the next day, they met again in the same place, near an illegal alcohol depot. According to witnesses cited by the same source, A. Dia allegedly reignited the argument by insulting his companion. B. Dièye responded. The argument quickly escalated. "Each broke a bottle and grabbed the shards," the newspaper reported.

A. Dia was hit in the face. He retaliated by throwing stones. The shouts alerted relatives. A. Dia's mother and other members of his entourage tried to intervene and calm him down, but without success. The confrontation continued. Both men were injured. A. Dia was hit in the chest and face.

Seriously injured, he collapsed. Firefighters urgently evacuated him to Dakar's Principal Hospital, where he was "admitted to intensive care".

B. Dièye, who also suffered facial injuries, fled the scene. He was eventually apprehended by police officers in Wakhinane-Nimzatt. After receiving treatment at King Baudouin Hospital, he was taken back to the police station and placed in custody.

When questioned by investigators, the same source indicated that the accused placed the blame on A. Dia. He accused him, in particular, of "creating a climate of fear in the neighborhood when he is drunk." B. Dièye is being prosecuted for mutual assault and battery and illegal possession of a firearm.
