At the launch of the series of tributes to the writer Boubacar Boris Diop at Cheikh Anta Diop University, Ousmane Sonko wanted to acknowledge the immensity of his work.
The kick-off took place yesterday.
A series of meetings dedicated to the Senegalese writer Boubacar Boris Diop are taking place there until this Wednesday.
Ousmane Sonko paid a vibrant tribute to the author, highlighting the political and cultural significance of his writings.
Looking back on the author's career, Ousmane Sonko recalled that since 1981, "Boubacar Boris Diop has been observing Senegal and Africa, questioning their people, reflecting on their origins and exploring the paths they take."
While acknowledging that summarizing it in its entirety would be a difficult task, he places the writer in the lineage of the greatest giants of our literary history, alongside Ousmane Sembène, praising in him "literary talent, faith in his people, attachment to his culture and the conviction that our national languages can contribute to building our future".
Wolof, a weapon of cultural reappropriation
While the first part of his career was marked by his writing in French, it was his shift to Wolof that cemented his unique identity as an author. For Ousmane Sonko, what has earned him a lasting place in our hearts and the admiration of young people is "his fight to promote the languages of his people." This commitment has resulted in major works such as Doomi Golo, Bàmmeelu Kocc Barma, and more recently, Malaanum lëndëm.
Recalling a personal memory, the politician spoke of the kindness of the elder who had welcomed him and given him books. "What he did for me, he regularly does for any young person he meets and in whom he detects a sincere love for his country and a desire to be of service to it," he stated.
Beyond the figure of the writer, the discussion takes on a societal dimension regarding the function of culture. Ousmane Sonko reminds us that "a country, a people, need those who cultivate the land and ensure that bodies are nourished as much as those who maintain reflection and nourish minds."
According to him, the nation needs exceptional figures to help it "look at itself in a mirror that allows it to escape self-forgetfulness and rediscover the meaning of its duty."
He strongly encouraged the population and young people to delve into this bibliography, concluding, "Boubacar Boris Diop shaped this mirror through his writings. Read these works. You will discover your own reflection, that of our country, what must be preserved, and what we must correct."
