The Kédougou branch of the National Division for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Related Practices (DNLT) has dismantled a cross-border network of pimping and human trafficking based in Banikoto, in the department of Saraya.
The main suspect, J. Moses, alias "Lizzy," a Nigerian national, was brought before the Kédougou prosecutor's office on September 11 on charges of criminal conspiracy, pimping, and human trafficking. The case broke on September 9, following a report concerning the presence of four young Nigerian girls, DF Iwatt, F. Godwin, G. Sunday, and C. Godwin, "held captive and forced into prostitution" in a makeshift dwelling, according to Libération.
The investigation revealed a well-established modus operandi. The suspect benefited from the complicity of "accomplices based in Nigeria, including a border police officer," who facilitated passage to Benin and provided "fake Nigerian national identity cards." The victims were then transported by bus to Mali before being "exfiltrated" to Senegal on motorcycle taxis, the newspaper reports.
Forced into prostitution, the same source continues, the young women had to hand over "all their earnings" to "Lizzy," sums ranging from 304,000 to 1.5 million CFA francs. The suspect admitted to having "laundered" and invested these funds in the construction of two restaurants, one in Banikoto and the other in Mali, as well as in rotating savings and credit associations (tontines) in Nigeria.
At the end of the investigation, "Lizzy" was placed under a detention order, while the four victims were entrusted to the reception center of the NGO "La Lumière" in Kédougou, concludes Libération.
