Marche contre les marches: Des personnes vivant avec un handicap crient leur ras le bol
People living with disabilities demonstrated peacefully in the streets of Matam, in northern Senegal, to denounce the precariousness of their living conditions and the inaccessibility of public buildings.
The procession, which started from the Fadel corner, ended in front of the governor's office where a memorandum of demands was handed to the deputy governor in charge of development.
"We have observed that people living with disabilities encounter accessibility problems in all public and private buildings in the region," Modou Hamidou Ndiong, president of the regional federation of people living with disabilities in Matam, told the press.
The official particularly criticized the lack of facilities for people with reduced mobility and called on the central government.
"Our appeal to the State is first and foremost for the signing of the decrees stemming from the social orientation law. We ask the State to sign these laws so that they can be implemented and so that people living with a disability can benefit from them," he added.
The social policy law exists. Its implementing decrees, however, are still gathering dust in government drawers. And it is this inaction that people living with disabilities in Matam have come to denounce.
Mr. Ndiong also deplored the conditions for receiving people living with disabilities in the region's health services and called on health authorities to take appropriate measures.
