Maroc : «perpétuité», «10 ans»… le cauchemar des Sénégalais condamnés à de longues peines de prison
Libération examines the situation of numerous Senegalese detainees in Morocco for offenses related to irregular migration. United in a collective of over 80 families, their relatives are demanding the implementation of the judicial convention signed between Senegal and Morocco, as well as the transfer of the detainees to Senegal.
Sentences ranging up to life imprisonment
The newspaper reports several accounts from families facing harsh sentences. Seynabou Dieng states that her husband, Assane Gaye, and his brother, Moussa Fall, were sentenced to life imprisonment two years ago. "I have nothing left and I had to return to my own family," she laments.
Ndeye Khady Sow, for her part, recounts that her eldest son, Mohamed Niang, arrested on October 9, 2023, was sentenced to "10 years in prison".
Families facing distress and financial difficulties
In Kaolack, Idrissa Thiam recounts the case of his nephew, El Hadji Maguette Guèye. He explains that the latter had helped the pirogue's captains when the engine was having trouble. He reportedly removed a spark plug, cleaned it, and then reinstalled it, allowing the boat to continue its journey. Because his clothes were stained with gasoline, he was then accused of being a smuggler by the Moroccan coast guard. "He hadn't even been in Morocco for 10 days. He wanted to go to Spain, but they accused him of being a smuggler before sending him to prison for 10 years," his uncle states.
Other families recount similar situations. Rouguiatou Baldé says she went "a year without any news" of her brother Mohamed Diop, before discovering he was being held in Morocco. Adama Mbengue, president of the collective, also mentions the case of his son, the wrestler Amanékh 2, sentenced to "10 years in prison."
In addition to these harsh sentences, there are financial difficulties. Fatou Sène states that her son, recently sentenced to ten years, must, like other prisoners, pay the equivalent of "3 million FCFA" to obtain his release. "These young people are exhausted, and the treatment they are subjected to is inhumane," she laments.
The families are appealing to Diomaye Faye
Faced with this situation, the families are requesting the direct intervention of the Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, with the Moroccan authorities. They are asking for the application of the transfer agreement to allow the detainees to "return to the country."
