Mort de « L’homme de Ziguinchor » en Gambie : un juge désigné pour faire la lumière face aux accusations de bavure
The Gambian justice system has appointed Judge Mamsamba Jallow as coroner to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Kalidou Diallo, a young Senegalese man with a large following on social media under the pseudonym "The Man from Ziguinchor." Les Échos reports that the Brusubi court entrusted the magistrate with this procedure, which aims to determine the exact circumstances of the death, which occurred on August 15th following an operation by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) in apartments in Kerr Serign.
The DLEAG's version of events is disputed. The agency claims that Kalidou Diallo injured himself in a fall while trying to flee its agents, before being taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. It also states that it discovered substances suspected of being drugs at the scene. However, a witness, Baye Modou, maintains that the young man was subjected to violence by DLEAG agents, according to the same source. The agency firmly rejects these accusations of torture and asserts that it is cooperating with the authorities.
According to the daily newspaper, the coroner will notably have to establish the identity of the deceased, the place, time, and circumstances of death. This legal procedure is not intended, at this stage, to establish criminal liability or pronounce a sentence. The court clerk has also invited anyone with information about the events to submit a written statement to the magistrate.
