Why was Fatoumata Baldé killed? A week after her body was discovered in Sangharé Coly, a village in the commune of Saré Coly Sallé, in the department of Vélingara, the gendarmerie's investigation has revealed details about the presumed motive for the crime. According to L'Observateur, the investigation is focusing on "marital disputes" related to the victim's inability to have more children after three cesarean sections. This situation reportedly fueled tensions with her husband, a 45-year-old Arabic-speaking teacher who had taken a second wife.
Feeling neglected and mistreated, the young woman had sought help from prominent figures before contacting the defense and security forces, who summoned her husband. On the evening of the incident, after joining her husband for his conjugal rounds, she returned to her room and fell asleep next to her daughter. Her husband then allegedly entered the room and struck her violently on the back of the neck with a blunt object.
After the incident, the suspect did not flee. Investigators reportedly found him in the house, pacing back and forth. Initially arrested and then released for the funeral arrangements, he was arrested again after the burial, according to the newspaper published by Groupe Futurs Médias. Brought before the Kolda prosecutor's office, he was remanded in custody at the prison for the murder of his spouse.
