We're all still smarting from Senegal's elimination by Belgium at the last World Cup. We dreamed of going further, of challenging Spain, of nipping France in the bud, in short, of playing with the big boys. But there you have it: at the big level, it's not just the cleats that are sharp. It's the management too.
In our country, we can build a brand new stadium, inaugurate it with great fanfare, sing the praises of its "European standard" pitch... then watch the grass quietly transform into a savannah.
The Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, the Lions' verdant home ground just a few months ago, has lost its luster. During the WAFU tournament, the pitch seemed to have given up before kickoff: dry, worn, and discolored. In short, a veritable savannah.
And our Lions, ever the professionals, will soon be forced to play on the savannah. For we learn in the press that Patrick Vieira's team will be returning to the legendary Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium. Very well. But there too, the pitch isn't exactly in great shape.
So our Lions are condemned to choose between two jungles: Diamniadio, savannah version, or Senghor, lawn version in recovery.
We wanted to compete with the great footballing nations. Perhaps we should start by competing with them on another field: that of maintenance.
Because building a stadium, inaugurating it, and cutting the ribbon is something we know how to do. Maintaining it in good condition for several years afterwards is apparently another Olympic discipline.
And with the Youth Olympic Games just weeks away, the real challenge is this: delivering the infrastructure, certainly, but above all knowing how to preserve it after the Games.
The major challenge will therefore not only be to build for the Youth Olympic Games. It will be to prevent our infrastructure from falling into ruin as soon as the spotlights go off.
