Coupe du monde 2026 : José Mourinho critique le niveau de la compétition
The new 48-team World Cup format continues to fuel debate. While FIFA welcomes a more open competition, José Mourinho is far more reserved. The Real Madrid coach believes that expanding the tournament has negatively impacted the quality of the matches.
Appearing on the Beast Mode On podcast, the Portuguese coach didn't hide his disappointment with the level of play displayed in several group stage matches. According to him, a World Cup should only bring together the best teams in the world and offer a truly top-level spectacle.
“For me, the World Cup should represent the cream of the crop. I understand that, from a social point of view, it is important for more countries to participate. But there is also the sporting aspect. Seeing a score of 7-1 in the group stage of a World Cup is not normal,” said the Special One.
The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and AS Roma coach admitted to enjoying some of the matches, particularly the Brazil-Morocco clash, but felt that the majority of the games did not live up to the event.
"Apart from Brazil-Morocco, which was a very good match, I mostly slept well and enjoyed some good dinners. I didn't stay up until three in the morning. I'll be honest: in some matches, I switch off after ten minutes," he added.
Despite these criticisms, the knockout stage could offer more exciting matches, with the entry of the best nations still in contention. This might just convince José Mourinho that the 2026 World Cup finally deserves its status as the greatest international competition.
