Coupe du monde 2026 : Pourquoi les buts contre leur camp se multiplient
Own goals have become one of the main curiosities of the 2026 World Cup. While the group stage is not yet over, eleven own goals have already been scored, one less than the record of twelve recorded at the 2018 World Cup.
According to "The Athletic," this trend is not solely explained by the expansion of the competition to 48 teams and 104 matches. Tactical developments in modern football also play a decisive role.
Teams now favor very quick attacks down the wings, followed by low, driven crosses. Caught off guard, defenders are often forced to make emergency saves in front of their goalkeepers. In these situations, the slightest mistake or poorly controlled deflection can send the ball into their own net.
This evolution of the game, marked by higher intensity and more direct attacking actions, largely explains the increase in the number of own goals.
If this pace continues, the record set in 2018 could be broken even before the end of the tournament.
