Football français : l’acteur Omar Sy raconte pourquoi il a abandonné le PSG pour supporter l’OM
A Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) supporter during his adolescence, Omar Sy eventually joined Olympique de Marseille (OM). In an interview with France Inter, the French actor explained how an experience he had in the early 1990s led him to switch his favorite club.
To promote the new season of Lupin, broadcast on Netflix, the French actor of Senegalese origin opened up about his passion for football. Interviewed by Sonia Devillers on France Inter, the actor recounted a turning point in his life as a fan: his switch from PSG to OM, two clubs that are historical rivals in French football.
This change of allegiance stems from his experiences at the Parc des Princes during his youth. At that time, the atmosphere in some of the Parisian stands was marked by episodes of violence. Omar Sy particularly remembers the difficulties he encountered in attending matches.
“I was a teenager at the time, to go to the stadium you had to go in a group of 10-15,” he says, before mentioning the Boulogne Boys, a PSG supporters group. “At the Parc des Princes, the Boulogne Boys are fascists who beat up guys like me,” the actor confides.
The group was eventually dissolved by the French authorities in 2008, in a context marked by acts of violence.
A revelation at the Vélodrome
It was ultimately in Marseille that Omar Sy discovered another way to live his passion for football. In the early 1990s, when OM was enjoying a golden period under the presidency of Bernard Tapie and had just won the Champions League in 1993, the actor spent a holiday in the Phocaean city.
This gave him the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the Vélodrome stadium. An experience that would definitively change his football preferences. Unlike what he had experienced in Paris, he discovered stands where conviviality and sharing were central.
"I spent a summer in Marseille when the club was at the peak of its glory. We went to the Vélodrome and there were two of us. And everything went well, it was good-natured, we hugged and kissed each other," he says.
The actor also mentions the jokes surrounding refereeing decisions and the moments of laughter shared with other fans. It's an atmosphere that immediately appeals to him and helps him understand what he wants from his relationship with football.
"And we go back and I just want this football, plain and simple," he concluded.
A key supporter for OM
More than thirty years after this discovery, Omar Sy remains attached to Olympique de Marseille, a club that won him over thanks to its atmosphere and the experience he had in its stands.
On the sporting front, the trajectories of the two rivals have evolved over the years. PSG has established itself among the major powers of European football, while OM continues to seek the stability necessary to compete sustainably with the best teams.
While Marseille fans may not always be able to compete with their Parisian rivals on the pitch, they can nevertheless count on the support of a prominent figure. Omar Sy's statement serves as a reminder that, for some supporters, choosing a club goes far beyond sporting results: it also rests on the emotions, the encounters, and the values discovered in the stands. This declaration is unlikely to sit well with the Paris Saint-Germain ultras.
