JOJ Dakar 2026 : La flamme olympique allumée à Athènes, coup d'envoi d'un parcours historique vers le Sénégal
On Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., the flame-lighting ceremony for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) took place on the legendary grounds of the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. A large Senegalese delegation, led by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Djirèye Clotilde Coly, traveled to the Greek capital for this landmark event, reports the Senegalese Press Agency (APS). Alongside her, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kirsty Coventry, and the President of the Dakar 2026 YOG Organizing Committee (COJOJ), Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, attended the ceremonies orchestrated by Greek sports journalist Penelope Gkioni.

Heading towards Dakar and crossing the 14 regions of the country
Expected this Friday in the Senegalese capital, the flame will make its first official appearance on Saturday at the Place du Souvenir Africain (African Remembrance Square). This moving moment will kick off a vast relay across the entire country, beginning September 14th in the Dakar-Plateau district. In total, approximately 450 torchbearers will take turns embodying the values of inclusion, diversity, and the passing on of knowledge. Among them are renowned athletes such as Amadou Dia Bâ, Amadou Gallo Fall, and Isabelle Sambou, alongside international cultural figures like actor Omar Sy and content creator Khaby Lame.
From the national journey to the lighting of the cauldron
After its lighting in Athens on September 10 and its official welcoming ceremony on September 12 at the Place du Souvenir Africain (African Remembrance Square), the flame will begin its journey in the Dakar region from September 14 to 27. It will then travel through the 13 other regions of Senegal from September 29 to October 24, passing successively through Thiès, Louga, Saint-Louis, Matam, Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kaffrine, Tambacounda, Kédougou, Kolda, Sédhiou, and Ziguinchor, with stops in Saly and Rufisque. Its final return to the Dakar region is scheduled for October 28-30, before the opening ceremony on October 31, which will include the lighting of the cauldron at the Place de la Nation (Nation Square).
The first Olympic event to be held on African soil, these Youth Olympic Games will bring together nearly 2,700 young athletes from around the world competing in more than twenty disciplines, under the slogan "Africa Hosts, Dakar Celebrates." The flame will continue to burn until November 13, 2026, at the end of two weeks of international competition and sporting festivities.
