Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has decided not to participate in his national team's next two Nations League matches against Israel. The 24-year-old, with 22 caps for Ireland, intends to express his opposition to the military operations in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement, Bazunu explained that he had given his decision considerable thought. The Irish goalkeeper insisted that his choice in no way diminishes his commitment to the national team.

“Representing my country is paramount to me. I have the utmost respect for each of my teammates, the manager, his staff and the Irish people. However, I have made a decision that I did not take lightly,” he said.

The player also cited his personal convictions to justify his absence. "I am a man of faith and I strive to be a person of character and principles. Therefore, I think it would be wrong to participate in the upcoming matches against Israel," he added.

Bazunu was careful to clarify that his actions were not directed against the Israeli people or the Jewish community. "My decision is based solely on my personal conviction that the killing of innocent people is unacceptable," he explained, denouncing the violence and human consequences of the conflict in Gaza.

The Irish goalkeeper also believes that athletes sometimes have a platform to champion causes that extend beyond football. "There are few moments in life when you have the opportunity to defend a greater cause, and I firmly believe this is one of them," he concluded.

For this tie, Ireland are officially scheduled to play away this Sunday in Hungary. The return leg, considered a home match, will be played the following week in Serbia.

Très courageux de sa part. L'Irlande est l'un des rares pays européens qui s'opposent au gouvernement israélien.
