Is Lamine Camara a victim of the national team's circumstances, or does he still need to mature and become more consistent? While he has established himself as an important player at Monaco, the Senegalese midfielder doesn't always manage to replicate his club influence for the Lions of Teranga. Confidence, competition, complementarity, responsibilities, playing style, or the pressure of expectations: the explanations are numerous. Three coaches and observers of Senegalese football offer different interpretations, but they all agree on one point: Lamine Camara still has significant room for improvement to become a true leader in the Lions' midfield.

Lamine Camara now faces a paradoxical situation. At club level, the young Senegalese midfielder has gradually established himself as a key player in AS Monaco's system. He plays regularly, strings together matches, takes on responsibilities, and displays an influence that has earned him the attention of several major European clubs.

With Senegal, however, the debate remains open. Why does the player who is seen to dictate the pace of a match with Monaco sometimes seem more discreet, less influential or less consistent with the Lions?

The question comes up regularly, especially since Lamine Camara has become one of the faces of the new Senegalese generation. His talent is no longer really in doubt. Nor is his potential. But his performance with the national team continues to be debated. Is it a problem of confidence? Of complementarity with his teammates? Of freedom in his play? Of the tactical system? Or simply a logical consequence of the different ways club and national team play?

Aly Male: "He must seize his chance as soon as he is given a starting position."

According to Aly Male, coach of US Gorée and holder of a CAF A license, Lamine Camara possesses all the qualities to establish himself permanently in the Lions' midfield. However, the coach believes the player still needs to take a step forward in terms of consistency and his approach to competition.

“We all have high hopes for Lamine Camara in the national team,” he emphasizes.

For him, one of the keys lies in the trust placed in the player. At Monaco, Lamine Camara thrives in an environment where he benefits from a certain degree of continuity. He plays regularly, knows his teammates, and knows that his coach is counting on him.

In the national team, the situation is different. Gatherings are short, competition is fierce, and places are hard to come by.

Aly Male believes that Lamine Camara must adopt a simple rule: when given an opportunity, he must do everything to turn it into a permanent fixture. "As soon as he is a starter and starts playing, he must tell himself that he must not be substituted, that he must always be a starter," he explains.

This is a way of saying that the young Monegasque player shouldn't just wait for the coach's confidence. He must also earn it through his performances.

Gana Guèye, a role model to follow

The coach believes that the young midfielder should benefit from the experience of the former Everton and Paris Saint-Germain player to integrate the demands of the position.

Because playing midfield for the national team isn't just about showcasing your technical skills. You have to know how to manage periods of pressure, provide security for the team, make the right decisions, and above all, maintain consistent performance throughout.

“He needs to learn alongside Gana Guèye,” insists Aly Male.

The message is clear: before aspiring to become the leader of the Senegalese midfield, Lamine Camara still needs to learn from those who have held that position for several years. For the coach, the player's talent is undeniable, but it must be accompanied by composure, humility, and the ability to accept the demands of top-level football.

The game system, a false excuse?

Aly Male also refuses to make the tactical system the main explanation for Lamine Camara's difficulties with the national team. According to him, a great player must be able to adapt to his coach's needs. "It's not the coach who has to adapt to the player, it's the player who has to adapt to the coach and his needs," he points out.

According to the former coach, Lamine Camara possesses enough qualities to thrive in different systems. It is therefore up to him to understand the instructions, adapt his positioning, and meet the coach's demands.

But this interpretation is not entirely shared by all observers.

Cheikh Diop: "In Monaco, he trains all year round with the same players."

For sports journalist Cheikh Diop, it's essential to compare apples to apples. According to him, the conditions under which Lamine Camara plays in Monaco are radically different from those he experiences with Senegal. "In Monaco, he trains with the same players all season. He's there for two years with the same players, every day at training. They know each other inside and out," he explains.

Conversely, with the Lions, Lamine Camara rejoins his teammates during training camps that generally only last a few days or weeks. Therefore, their understanding and chemistry are necessarily less developed.

A midfielder is particularly dependent on his relationships with his teammates. He must know when to drop deep, when to push forward, when to ask for the ball, and when to cover his teammate.

In Monaco, Lamine Camara can work on them week after week. With the national team, he sometimes has to build them up in just a few sessions.

For Cheikh Diop, the tactical question therefore cannot be completely dismissed.

At Monaco, Lamine Camara plays in a system that allows him to partner Denis Zakaria in a two-man midfield. This gives him a role that provides him with greater responsibility in the team's build-up play and balance.

In the national team, he has often played in different formations, notably with three midfielders. "At Monaco, he plays with Zakaria; they are the only two in midfield," Cheikh Diop points out. This difference can significantly affect his performance.

When a player operates in a two-man midfield, his responsibilities and spaces are different from those of a player integrated into a three-man midfield. His positioning, movements, and risk-taking are not the same.

Lamine Camara therefore has to constantly readjust his game. And for a long time, according to Cheikh Diop, he wasn't necessarily the one entrusted with the keys to the Senegalese midfield.

Gana Gueye, then Pape Gueye: Responsibilities shared for a long time

The journalist points out that the Senegalese midfield was long built around Idrissa Gana Gueye and Pape Gueye. Lamine Camara then had to find his place in this balance. "For a long time, we entrusted the play to Idrissa Gueye and subsequently to Pape Gueye," he emphasizes.

In Monaco, he is given more responsibility. With the national team, he long operated in an environment where responsibilities were already distributed. The question was therefore not only what Lamine Camara could do, but also what exact role the coaching staff assigned him.

With Patrick Vieira, a new responsibility?

The arrival of Patrick Vieira could well be a turning point. In the Lions' first matches under the French coach, Lamine Camara was positioned in front of the defense. This positioning could allow him to get on the ball more often and, above all, to participate more directly in organizing the game.

Against Mozambique, the Senegalese midfielder reportedly showed more personality and responsibility in the middle of the park, despite difficult playing conditions. "He established himself as a leader. He took control of the game," the journalist analyzed.

This is an interesting development, especially as Vieira seems to want to build a new playing style with the Lions. If Lamine Camara manages to maintain this role, he could gradually become one of the linchpins of the Senegalese midfield.

"He just lacks that little bit of responsibility."

For Cheikh Diop, Lamine Camara's talent isn't the issue. The real challenge is his ability to accept and take on more responsibility. "He just lacks that bit of responsibility he needs in this Senegalese team," he believes.

The journalist specifically mentions his performances with the youth teams and the local selection. In these teams, Lamine Camara was regularly considered one of the key players in midfield.

Why couldn't he replicate that influence with the Lions?

The answer could lie in the competition and the status of the players around him.

Sheikh Oumar Aïdara: "He thinks he is irreplaceable"

The analysis by Cheikh Oumar Aïdara, FIFA manager and consultant, is much more severe.

For him, the main problem is linked to "overconfidence." According to the consultant, Lamine Camara has benefited from significant confidence from various coaches since his debut with the national team. Under Aliou Cissé, then Pape Thiaw, and now with Patrick Vieira, the player has regularly been considered a key option in midfield.

For Aïdara, this succession of signs of confidence may have had an unintended consequence: the feeling that his place is practically guaranteed. "He thinks he can solve the team's midfield problem," he analyzes. According to the pundit, Lamine Camara allows himself to take certain risks with the national team that he doesn't necessarily dare to take at club level, where the competition is fiercer.

Competition as a remedy?

It is precisely for this reason that Cheikh Oumar Aïdara is calling for more competition around Lamine Camara. For him, the young midfielder should not be seen as an automatic starter. "The mistake is making him believe he will be the automatic replacement for Idrissa Gana Guèye," he believes.

In other words, Lamine Camara must earn his place at every gathering. Competition could therefore have a positive effect on his performance: forcing him to stay focused, limit unnecessary risks, and play more in the collective interest.

"Talent alone is not enough."

The consultant also emphasizes the unique nature of Lamine Camara's position. The midfield is one of the most vulnerable areas of a team. A loss of possession there can immediately expose the defense. "The position demands a great deal of balance, concentration, and talent. Talent alone is not enough," he points out.

For Aïdara, Lamine Camara therefore needs to learn to better assess risks. At Monaco, a loss of possession can be compensated for by teammates and the team's organization. With the national team, in a context where automatic plays are less ingrained, a poorly managed risk can have more serious consequences. The player must therefore learn to distinguish between moments when he can try something and those when simplicity should prevail.

In addition to this, there is another dimension: Lamine Camara is no longer just a young player being discovered.

He is now under intense scrutiny. His performances at Monaco, his progress with the national teams, and the interest from major European clubs have significantly increased his exposure. Every match with Senegal is therefore watched with even greater expectations. He is expected to be decisive, to win back possession, to break lines, to score goals, to create opportunities for his teammates, and to be able to take control of the midfield.

Could this accumulation of expectations weigh on his performance?

That's a possibility.

But above all, the three analyses show that Lamine Camara needs to learn to manage this new status.

Finding the right balance between trust and high standards

The paradox is clear. Lamine Camara needs confidence to fully express his talent. But he also needs high standards and competition to continue progressing.

Too little confidence can hold a young player back. Too much confidence without any reciprocation can also prevent him from recognizing his limitations. This is precisely where the coach's role becomes crucial. Patrick Vieira will have to find the right balance between giving Lamine Camara responsibilities and reminding him that no place is guaranteed. The player, for his part, will have to demonstrate that he is capable of handling those responsibilities.

Should Lamine Camara become the midfield boss of the Lions?

In Monaco, Lamine Camara is showing he can be an influential player. With the youth teams and the local national team, he has already demonstrated his ability to take charge in midfield. Now he just needs to translate that personality to the first team level.

For Cheikh Diop, this evolution could happen quickly with Patrick Vieira, provided that the coach continues to give him the keys to the game.

Aly Male, for his part, insists on the need for the player to remain humble, to learn from the senior players and above all to seize every opportunity.

Sheikh Oumar Aïdara calls for more competition and tactical rigor to prevent player talent from turning into overconfidence.

Three different interpretations, then, but a common conclusion: Lamine Camara has the talent to become a key player for the Lions. What he still lacks, perhaps, is the ability to translate that talent into consistency, to fully assume his responsibilities, and to understand that a leadership role is earned match after match.

With Patrick Vieira, a new chapter could begin.

Basta way.
